about

Emma Bosworth releases her atmospheric new single ‘Summer’; in gentle tribute to the devastating Australian bushfires of the 2019/20 Summer, acknowledging and highlighting the marked shift in public mood towards the hotter months in Australia in recent years.

“Australian’s no longer look forward to Summer, we’re afraid of it. I started writing the song when the bushfires had been burning for a few weeks… we were breathing bushfire smoke and it felt like the whole planet was struggling to breathe, and I felt helpless. I wanted to write something that speaks to the tension we were all feeling, while still trying to hold onto the essence of what a great Summer feels like… it’s important we don’t live in fear, that we celebrate and uphold positive ideas about Summer. I want my kids to be able to enjoy long languid summer days… but also be aware of the changes we are facing due to climate change.” Emma says.

Written and recorded in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and new band member Reuben Schafer (The Cairos / Stranger Land), the work started to really take shape during Covid-19 lockdown.

“Reuben and I found ourselves with a whole lot of time on our hands during lockdown in Queensland – we both knew wanted to make the most of this unique time. Our creative relationship is relatively new. I really love Reuben’s moody style of playing, it’s created a whole new atmospheric range for my style of writing.” Emma Bosworth

The track came together readily, with the pair enjoying the creative home recording process, elated with the mood captured in Darek Mudge’s final mix.

“Once we had the bones of the song, Reuben laid down the musical parts and sent them to me – I did a few takes of different melodic parts and then we restructured it from there. Everything except for the drums were recorded by Reuben at his home studio – we really weren’t sure if what we were creating was good enough, but when we sent it to Darek (Mudge), he mixed it so beautifully. We knew we were onto something.” Emma Bosworth

lyrics

Summer’s coming over
Over our heads
Summer’s coming over
Into our beds

I’m not ready for your touch, as it stands

Water on the inside
Moving slowly outside

I need another ways to amends
Moving over country
Intentions immense
I see through this
Tell me something
That i can lean on
To build it stronger

I’m not looking for love

Blue stone’s rising at the back of your hand

Canopy marks the century
Take me there
